| As a working vessel, the Maggie plied the
Bay and coastal waters from Monterey to Fort Bragg, carrying light cargo. Built in the
1870's, she was retired in the 1930's, becoming a home to a number of residents, like
fitness guru Jack Lalanne and New Yorker cartoonist Herb Williams. Restoration began in
1990. Her old hull was sawed off and replaced with a concrete hull. The engine room was
converted to an elegant master bedroom and the wheel house made into a dining room. But
some of the past has been preserved: in the bow, the original hull built with old growth
fir over oak frames is still visible, as are the wooden pegs used in lieu of spikes and
bolts, the cotton batting used to seal the deck and the original Coast Guard documentation
numbers carved on the aft cross beam.
